DIY mobile phone
May 21, 2007The Maker Faire was lots of fun again this year (read more about it here, here, and here). There was tons of interesting stuff to see, but this DIY mobile phone grabbed my attention!
The device uses off-the-shelf hardware like Gumstix modules and open source software like Linux. It’s being designed by members if the Silicon Valley Homebrew Mobile Phone Club and it’s a part of the Open Cell Phone (TuxPhone) project…
Here are some pictures (with notes).
Sony Ericsson P1i hands on
May 15, 2007So I went to the UIQ Fast Track here in San Francisco and I managed to get my hands on a prototype Sony Ericsson P1i :)
This is one sexy phone! Here are some pictures…
I also received a Sony Ericsson M600i for simply attending the conference, which was a lovely perk.
The Motorola RIZR Z8 was also being gifted, but since I’ve never owned a phone with both a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard, I opted for the M600i (ironically mine came with an AZERTY - aka. French - keyboard).

Nokia N75 iSync plugin
May 9, 2007Since Nokia decided that the N75 is not worthy of an iSync plugin, I went ahead and made one :) Simply download, unzip and copy to the /Library/PhonePlugins folder! After pairing your N75, run iSync, and select Devices|Add Device…
OQO Model 02 HSDPA mod
May 7, 2007As you probably know, I’m a fan of the OQO Model 02! But I’m also a fan of HSDPA…
Unfortunately, so far the Model 02 is only available with EVDO from either Sprint or Verizon, and despite getting the SERO discount two weeks ago, I was not very excited with the idea of paying another bill beyond my existing T-Mobile and Cingular AT&T accounts. So what’s a girl to do? Well, just mod her Model 02 and replace EVDO with HSPDA, of course :)
And that’s exactly what I’ve done! Take a look at the pictures of my mod and keep your eyes peeled for more information soon…
Unboxing the Nokia N75
May 5, 2007It’s been a long time waiting, but the first US-compatible UMTS Symbian device, the Nokia N75, is finally here!
It was originally announced at the same time as the Nokia N95, and it was supposed to be available before the holidays last year, but it was delayed and surrounded with uncertainty for months. Even before that, other US-compatible UMTS Symbian devices (including a version of the Nokia N80) were supposedly being developed, but never materialized.
Despite lacking HSDPA and being a clamshell phone, I picked up the N75 yesterday to see how much Cingular crippled it (perhaps it’s even possible to unbrand/unlock it) and to see how it compares to the N80, E61 and N95 I’m already familiar with - not to mention, I have 30 29 days left to return it :)
So here are some pictures of my N75, including a size comparison with my N95. Then, how about a “hands-on” and a review?
The censorship war
May 2, 2007There’s a censorship war raging on right now all over the Internet - it’s about IP and copyright vs. free speech and fair use…
It’s about this (hexadecimal) number:

Can you copyright a number? Share and discuss!
